Won back after decades of occupation, organizing, education, and lawsuits, the island is now a Hawaiian cultural preserve. Of national and international significance, the inspired cultural and environmental renaissance of Kaho`olawe is a metaphor for the earth itself: a beautiful land of limited resources, damaged by violence and poor stewardship, but starting to heal under the guidance of indigenous people following traditional ways.

Protect Kaho`olawe Ohana

The ‘Ohana is a grassroots organization dedicated to the island of Kaho‘olawe and the principles of Aloha ‘Āina throughout Hawai‘i. In its work to heal Kaho‘olawe, it strengthens people’s relationship with the land and pays respect to the spirits of the land. On other Hawaiian islands, it works to protect the natural and cultural resources of Hawaiians’ ancestral lands.
